abstract = "The spectral reflectance properties of mixtures of substrates with
various compositions and grain sizes contaminated with ethanol,
diesel, gasoline and crude oils (šAPIs 43.2, 19.2 and 27.5) were
analyzed in the range of near infrared (NIR) and short wave
infrared (SWIR) wavelengths, using a FieldSpec-3 Hi-Res
spectroradiometer. Unique absorption features and characteristics
in conjunction with variations in spectral signatures, generated
by the difference between the compositional contaminants, allowed
the identification of spectral patterns in the spectral responses.
These features can be used to differentiate the contaminants and
also for their qualitative and quantitative determination in
contaminated substrates. The intensities of the absorption
features can be correlated with the abundances of the contaminants
in mixtures and the unique position of the absorption features can
be used for the individual characterization of the contaminants.
The grain size of the contaminated substrate directly influences
the variation of spectral signatures, since this is significantly
greater and more rapid in the mixtures of contaminants with finer
grained substrates. The results of this study have relevant
applications in the identification of soils contaminated with fuel
and oil and showed the great possibility to diagnostic the
composition of the contaminant as well as the concentration of
that in the soil in using ground, multispectral and hyperspectral
remote sensing surveys.",
